WHAT THE HAIL! COTTAGE GARAGE DOOR REPLACED

THERE ARE SIGNS OF AN ADD ON TO THE ORIGINAL GARAGE STRUCTURE THAT ONCE HAD A SLIDING GARAGE DOOR that was replaced by a steel roll-up garage door that raised upward.  The original garage was built in the 1940s with a new add-on in the 1960s.  We're thinking this steel door was hung in the 1980s when this kind of garage door was popular.  

Heavy HAIL damage in 2024 demanded that it be replaced.  The Insurance Agent told Hubby that this was the worst hail damage he'd seen.  

HUBBY built news doors this past month.  So very pleased with the outcome.  So pleased.  The finished project makes the old garage need a face lift of sorts screaming PAINT ME.  

Eventually the siding will get a good paint job.  The roof was shingled December 2024.  It was in very sad repair.  Wish I had a picture to show the difference.

Hubby wanted a different look for the old garage.  After doing his homework, replacing the doors with premade Mission Style doors would have been over $3400 plus $1200 SHIPPING. $4600.00 for this project.  Back to the drawing board.  

Our Insurance company's allowance for an inexpensive uninsulated steel door came in at $1875.00.  This was including the installation.  Even with a steel door, the quality one can get at this price isn't much.

Hubs decided to build the doors himself.  The Insurance payment should just about cover the entire cost of what he spent.  Our PT CRUISER, PETE is our truck.  I don't think we want to get rid of PETE anytime soon.

He's a one man crew.  
I'm just his sidekick for running errands
and taking pictures, etc.

He amazes me how talented he is.  This one man crew loaded the heavy doors onto a dolly and wheeled them through the yard to the back of the garage to install them all by himself.  I couldn't spot him as my hip is out of sorts so he was on his own and did a beautiful job.

He had to pace himself when he could work on this project as the weather didn't always cooperate.  The cold and the rain added resistance for the one man show.  We are relieved that the new doors are painted and installed!  Praise GOD that my Husband can do this kind of work. I am so very proud of him and what he has accomplished on this little COTTAGE and GARAGE.

Our little RETIREMENT COTTAGE is a fixer upper and we're working at fixing HER up one day at a time.  With the health issues we have, it's a miracle we are doing this THING.
