Years ago at Christmas time we visited the Schaeffler House Museum in Hillsboro, Kansas located at 312 East Grand. It was enchanting. I felt like we had gone back in time to a different Century visiting the 1909 Edwardian Queen Anne Style House.
The House features double Parlors, formal Dining~room and a turn of the Century Kitchen. Each room was nicely furnished and beautifully decorated. I'd like to return to walk about this elegant house and just day dream. I just love this kind of HISTORY.
German Lutheran immigrants William and Ida Schaeffler opened a small dry goods and grocery store in 1887 at Main Street and Grand Avenue in Hillsboro with $500 and the willingness to work 18 hour days. By the end of 1st decade of the 20th Century, business had grown to the largest mercantile in Marion County.
The Schaefflers were founders of the Zion Lutheran Church of Hillsboro.
