Historic 1886 Elgin Hotel ~Part One~

PART ONE

~The Historic 1886 Elgin Hotel~
Bed and Breakfast

The Exterior, The Entry, Lobby and Stairwell

As I entered into the interior I was at HOME!  Ready to move right in.  Loved this place.  Over Memorial Day Week-end, we were able to see inside the Historic Elgin Hotel in Marion, Kansas.  A couple of my nephews and their families stayed at this gorgeous Hotel and invited us to take a peek inside the BED and BREAKFAST.

I fell in love with the deep reds,
rubies and garnet colors all over again.

Wait till you see the Second Floor with a Family Room, Hallways, Eating Area, and Kitchen!!!

Decorating On The Prairie: Some Pink

Thank you for stopping by Home Haven and joining me for a CHAT! I'm decorating on the Prairie!  In my old 126 year old house I keep flip flopping on the colors to use in each room.  Except the Little Girl's Bedroom...Pink for sure.  That was an easy choice since the lil one LOVES PINK.

The kitchen is quite small so I will go with lighter colors, especially for the cabinets that will be painted white.  Now for what shade of white...I'm not sure.  A warmer white verses colder white?  Warmer for COZY.

Taking into account the natural lighting that comes into the rooms through the windows and what colors we enjoy seeing every day throughout the day is challenging for me.  I think since the house is a native limestone that's buff colored that colors on the neutral side would help carry a comforting theme throughout Home Haven.

Let me share with you about what's going on around here.  I'm a featured contributor in a internet magazine!!!

On Mondays
THE CHRISTIAN HOME MAGAZINE carnival hosted by Mrs. White at The Legacy of Home is posted.  She host the magazine that has 12 columns on various home issue topics.  Thank you, Mrs. White for this opportunity to be a part of the Design and Decorate column.

In the DESIGN and DECORATE column this post will be featured!  I admit that by no means am I a professional Decorator.  I'm not.  An on going interest in this area is my claim to fame.  Just a strong interest in what people use to decorate their personal space.

Trends that have taken place in the Home Decorating arena has turned my crank for decades.  My personal reality of what I have to decorate with in my home holds hands with my thought life of what I imagine decorating could be.  This can be uplifting and hopeful or a huge let down and depressing.  The end result comes from personal choice to be hopeful and choose to be uplifted by believing that home decorating is to be fun and functional.  Decorate!  It's temporary and ever changing.  It doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.  I think it's very acceptable to use what you have on hand to spruce up your HOME.

If the barn yard theme is screaming imitate me...imitate me!  You don't have to listen to this voice.  Some would say this STYLE stinks!  Grins.

Being careful and staying balanced when observing what's out there and what others have doesn't have to have an adverse effect on us.  Coveting others lives can cause jealousy and bitterness if you don't watch it!  So if we can take greedy emotions out of seeing how others decorate and not get upset that we just aren't there yet...it'll help.  Giving thanks to God for what we do have contributes to a healthy mind set.  A peaceful home.

Every one has their own sense of style.  What if it seems messy and frumpy?  That becomes a style!  It can all change with a prayer and some elbow grease.

From what I have gathered over the years about decorating and design...there seems to be certain styles that become POPULAR (WELL LIKED) that take hold of our culture and away it goes.  What was popular at market that sells at our stores, seen in the internet homes and plastered across the magazines may fall from grace the next day!  Makes my head spin.

TODAYS popular decorating TREND (in my opinion) are inclusive of down sizing, decluttering and less is more with a strong push toward going green.  Lighter colors on the walls with fru fru chandeliers hanging from the ceilings used in a room with paint peeling from rough wood furniture and stylized sofas is so IN these days.

HOW DO I FEEL ABOUT THIS???  I have mixed feelings.  If you're sensible when necessity is needed in life, it mandates what one should have in their home.  More than likely will.  Just because it's necessary doesn't mean it has to be unattractive or ugly to look at.  Right?  Right.

Keep in mind:
What the room will be used for.
Decide on a theme.
Choose a main color to use in the room.  Either use this main color on the walls and floors or in the items being used as accents to bring some color to the room.
Don't forget what kind of natural lighting will exist in the room.
If the room's lighting is naturally dark, move  toward lighter colored walls...but if you just have to have darker walls to make the room extra cozy...do it.  After all it's your home.
Place personal artifacts about the room.
Some like to take a painting or print that will hang in the room and use the colors that's in the artwork to use as the colors of choice throughout the rest of the room.

Whatever the style you choose to use...make sure you're comfortable with your choices.  It's HOME.

DECORATING

I knew a very frugal Lady named Edith that shared with me a excellent guideline for decorating. She said with ease, "If your room has clean ceilings, floors, and walls, and the windows have nice curtains, you'll have an attractive room."

John 3:7

Marvel not that I said unto thee,

Ye must be born again.

King James Version (KJV)

PSALM 118:17

I shall not die,
but live, and declare
the works of the Lord.

PROVERBS 24:3-4

By wisdom
a house is built,
and through understanding

it is established;
through
knowledge

its rooms are filled with rare

and beautiful treasures.

WISHES

NO MATTER HOW BADLY YOU WISH with all your might that the something devastating that happened in your life hadn't happened and want so badly to go back in time to prevent it from happening...it isn't humanly possible to do this. You can't change the fact that it happened. IT DID. But JESUS can change the MEANING of what happened to you and give you PEACE. He can show you the way in which you are to go. God richly BLESS you. ~Deanna
