Visited the THRIFT STORE yesterday and noticed Mottahedeh dishes on the shelf. I've never heard of MOTTAHEDEH. The fruit design on these reminded me of gorgeous dishes I once saw at the Historic St. Louis Campbell House Museum with fruit images sitting on their massive dining room table and also stored in the Butler's Pantry.
I knew these were reproductions because they were in too good of condition to be from the 1880s. Anywho, I thought I could get them at the price they were marked and possibly sell at a later date. HUBBY was with me and he used his handy dandy phone to check on these. Pleased with what he shared. Will get them and figure out what to do with them later. AM VERY PLEASED.
The Mottahedeh salad dishes found at the THRIFT STORE were at one time sold by Scully & Scully. I'm aware of Scully & Scully company catalog of upper end items. Did some more research and believe the thrift price was exceptional.
Mildred Ruth Mottahedeh founded Mottahedeh & Company, a prominent designer and supplier of luxury porcelain made in Italy and Portugal for the U.S. market, based on historical models or direct replicas, that were sold in part through Tiffany & Co. and other luxury retailers, and museum gift shops. Her large personal collection of Chinese export porcelain for the European market, formed together with her Iranian husband, Rafi Y. Mottahedeh, who died in 1978, was catalogued by David Howard in China For The West (2 vols., 1989).[1] Mottahedeh porcelain table services were purchased for the White House, three Presidential Inaugurations, and the State Department's reception suite.[2] A well-known and iconic service is the Mottahedeh "Tobacco Leaf" pattern, based on 18th-century Chinese export porcelains for the Portuguese market, which employs 27 underglaze and enamel colors and gilding.
I think I'll find a nice place to display them on the Dining room wall after I paint the Dining room in September.
