weathering the weather with watermelon never seemed so grand!!!
Over the week-end, our temps soared beyond comfortable.
I didn't eat any watermelon, but eyed it in the supermarket thinking that cold,
juicy fruit would sure be good about now.

HOT weather and watermelons compliment one another. Wouldn't you say?

According to John Mariani's The Dictionary of American Food and Drink,

"Watermelon" made its first appearance in an English dictionary in 1615!

Some FUN FACTS:

*Watermelons are the most common melon plant coming from southern Africa.

*There's evidence it was cultivated in the Nile Valley when numerous seeds recovered from the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun.

*Largest watermelon provider is China.

*Japan grows a cubic square watermelon.

*In the United States commercial plantings are to have one beehive per acre is minimum recommendation by the US Department of Agriculture for pollination of conventional, seeded variety. 1200 varieties???

*Oklahoma State Senate passed a bill on April 17, 2007 declaring watermelon as the official State vegetable with some controversy as the watermelon is a friut.

Nutrition News:

Watermelon contains about 6% sugar and 92% water by weight.

Watermelon is a great source of Vitamin C, contains large amounts of beta carotene, and lycopene. A great diuretic!
