In the week to come we should see more progress, Lord willing. I know GOD honors turning chaos into order because HE did it creating our earthly HOME.
Interesting info. I'll share.
So, without further ado...
I grabbed a chilled bottled water for a dollar and a 50 cent greeting card then checked out. Being overcharged for the card didn't fly as I told the clerk it was in the 50 cent section. She corrected it and I went on. I needed a bag for the card as I was on foot and didn't want to lose the card and envelope while carrying it the rest of the way HOME. No smiles on the clerk's face. Oh well, she's not there to smile at me.
Not so much as a thank you. Something's not quite right when the clerks cannot say a thank you for your business even when it's a small purchase. Better courtesy could be given though. Difference in opinion and business etiquette.
OFF I WENT UP THE HILL on my way HOME wondering if all this sweating and walking is worth it? I said out loud, "I won't be able to do this in 5 years." My mind starts wondering and thinking about when my Mom and Dad sold their house and moved into the Hilltop Manor to live. DOWNSIZING to the hilt. Mom was 75 and Dad was 80. I remember well their Auction they had and getting settled into their apartment. Dad's health was ailing since he was 77 when he broke his back. He mostly sat and slowly shrunk in size going from 5'9" to 4'11" in height until he passed away at 90.
I'm downsizing our belongings now and still have a ways to go. It's taking me so much longer to get rid of stuff. I seem to be busy downsizing and not living the way I think I should be living at nearly 70 years old. I believe we should have goals and work toward them even at my age, but so much of what I do to busy myself isn't the best way to live. I'm so slow at this all that it's rather scary. I can turn lose of more STUFF.
I was beet red in the face, sweaty all over with sweat running in my eyes while I was sipping on the water I had just bought as I trudged up a hill on my way HOME when I heard a car behind me. I was hoping it was my Husband and I could hitch a ride HOME before I collapsed. It was him. Praise the Lord. I had walked 2 miles altogether already and if I had walked on HOME, it would have been an additional 1/2 mile. I was done and ever so happy that he came along.
I AM THANKFUL FOR HIM.
I'm thankful to have a roof over my head and a bed to lie down on, clean clothes to wear, food to eat and clean water to drink. Working washer, dryer, vacuum sweeper, stove and refrigerator. Owner of dishes, glasses, silverware and pots 'n pans. Running water, electricity, air conditioning and heat in the winter. A bath tub and towels. Cars to drive and time to sit. A loving Husband and family. I'm thankful I know how to read, think, count change, save money and pray prayers to Almighty God who hears me and calls me by name. I have salvation through the Lord Jesus and am heaven bound. I am filled with the HOLY SPIRIT and am teachable.
CHANGE. Less TV. More art and writing stories. More interest in health. Family ties. Christ centered thinking and more prayers. I will not worry. I am well taken care of.
HUBBY is building a linen closet in the bathroom. Making progress! PTL. It will be awesome when finished and filled with our towels and toiletries.
TODAY with the walking completed, I'll sit and do more paperwork. Taking this chaos and turning it into order is a blessing. I should be almost done with it by sundown then this week I'll tackle the laundry and cleaning the house. Walking each day if I can help it.
Life on the prairie is where I make my HOME for the time being. I will deliberately look for the good.
BY THE TIME WE RETURNED HOME FROM A AFTERNOON OF SHOPPING, it was freezing outside which I couldn't hardly believe as I wasn't cold without a coat on. "31 degrees" said the electronic billboard at the bank. 31. That's below the freezing mark. Slap me silly. I am in the twilight zone with WINTER coming on. In about two weeks, it will officially be WINTER where the sun stays out longer each day as we head toward SPRING. I can hold on knowing that we are one day closer to SPRING.
Tomorrow it's suppose to be a pleasant day where the roofers will come to work on our house and garage.
We went for an afternoon outing.
When they come to roof, I may have to go somewhere to get away from the noise they will make as they work at scraping the old shingles off the house. Tis possible that by sundown they will have finished with our property. "Before" pics have been taken already. If I can say I'm excited, then I will. The different colored shingles will seriously improve the looks of our sweet fixer-upper COTTAGE.
We headed to where one of our storage units is located. We had 4 pieces of furniture to unload there from the car. For the time being, the SHE SHED is being cleared out and we have to have someplace to go with the furniture for now. In a few days, the SHE SHED will be completely empty ready to sweep and wash the floor then we will carry the bedroom pieces to set up. HURRAY. Can't wait, but have to.
ONTO MORE SHOPPING.
I wanted to stop at the new DOLLAR TREE to purchase SWEET CHAOS DRIZZLED POPCORN PEPPERMINT CRUNCH for a CHRISTMAS treat when we gather as family. A few days ago I sampled some and wanted to get some more for CHRISTMAS. It was a delicious discovery. When I got out of the car to go into DOLLAR TREE, a lady in the parking lot told me that they were closed due to no workers. They quit.
In my little brain, I thought the manager could run a cash register until workers are hired. Instead the doors were locked for the day as Christmas Shoppers go elsewhere. I went to Manhattan's DOLLAR TREE stores for my popcorn, but before I did this, we had a storage unit drop. That means headway on the SHE SHED. PTL.
A late lunch was part of our day. A big salad. I needed to return some ketch-up to WALMART as the seal was broken and I didn't want to take a chance with this bottle having been tampered with. Shopping took place and I always enjoy day dreaming while looking at the decorations. Ketch-up, lettuces, cucumbers, bagged frozen vegetables, milk and eggnog. No cauliflower rice. On CLEARANCE, I found a four pack of white notebook binders for $3. Comparing to what I pay at Staples, this was quite a BARGAIN.
S. c. o. r. e.
ANOTHER GROCERY STORE STOP was needed for CRAV'N WATER CRACKERS. Stocking up for the Winter.
By this time, HOME was next. We unloaded our spoils. Cheese and crackers for Supper. Movie night for us.
PLANS FOR THE WEEK-END? Always. I'm walking for sure. May try to walk 2 miles around the track with the pleasant weather. Laundry. Clean the car out. Hang twinkle lights and garland on the porch. Vacuum the carpets. Put decorating boxes away. Clear the table off. WAIT for the SHE SHED to be ready for furniture. Box up knick-knacks from the pink bedroom. Have some quiet time. Load more furniture into the car to take to the storage unit and unload.
Stay focused and get the COTTAGE ready for CHRISTMAS. Make this the next step in the plan to creating a lovelier HOME. AFTER a very long and messy year, we made little headway when it came to getting settled and going through boxes from the move. Unpacking has been a long drawn out thing.
Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle and more shuffling. Lost track of how many times we have shuffled our belongings. It'll get done, but at a terribly slow pace. It took so much longer than I ever imagined as we had a year full of health issues that slowed us way down. The Bathroom remodeling was at a stopping place to where we could switch gears and shuffle some rooms around. I wanted to get the rest of the house ready for practical living before Christmas. We are no way close to being settled.
Seems like a small thing about my China finally being out of cardboard boxes and sitting pretty in the china cabinet, but it has taken close to a year to get it here. The antique Tea Leaf China is displayed in the small Library case. I have some crystal in the dining room corner cabinet. Pots 'n pans have been stored in about 5 different places. Same with everyday dishes and glassware. I wasn't contented with where things were and had to keep moving things about for the best results. It took effort and time. Now the closet needs reorganized. Lord help.
After the rooms are basically set up with furniture that we will use daily, we will relax and wait for the HOLIDAYS to pass. TAKE A BREAK. Then start shopping for carpet. 2025 will the year for carpeting, painting the ceilings and walls of our 1900 Folk Victorian FIXER-UPPER. I pray I can lighten up and enjoy the ride.
May you have a wonderful December.
CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS TO YOU,
WHAT WILL I DO TODAY TO MAKE MY HOME MORE COMFORTABLE? CLEAN and play the radio.
Each day is a little different than the day before and this is what keeps it interesting around here. I definitely have much to do. What will I do today to make HOME more comfortable?
CLEAN and play the radio, tidy a bit, be a pleasant woman to be around, be helpful and attentive. Do not complain and be sensitive to my Husband.
I will be cleaning to make my HOME more comfortable. It's a given that our HOME needs kept up. Having an uncluttered place to call HOME makes it comfortable and when the rooms are clean and orderly, it goes a long ways toward making a HAPPIER HOME. SO not only will I continue to clean and organize, I will pray for blessings in our COTTAGE. I will pray that I have a healthy attitude and the peace of God be present in our haven. Amen.
Oh Lord, let it be so.
Having a relaxed ritualistic cleaning pattern needs established and exercised. Taking the emotion out of the cleaning and just doing it, is a winning combination and technique.
Continued cleaning is a must. With our 50th wedding anniversary approaching at the end of the week, we took some alone time to celebrate before our actual date this past week-end. We're both having disbelief that 50 years has passed since we said "I DO." It's almost scary that this time on earth has passed so quickly when looking at the years gone by. I want to remember the journey and be happy.
Coming HOME after two nights from the Elmdale, Kansas area at CLOVER CLIFF RANCH to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary early, has left a pile of traveling items needing put away. Pics to follow later of our lovely time away. I'm so glad and contented that we went the extra mile and experienced this just for us.
No Reception for our 50th. Need some pictures taken for newspaper announcement. We'll have a quiet evening at HOME with a gourmet meal next week-end. Freshly brewed iced tea and spring water on ice. Simple salad made of shredded Romaine lettuce, thinly sliced radishes, feta cheese, cherry tomatoes, sprinkled walnuts with vinaigrette dressing made of olive oil and vinegar. A large Sirloin steak, string green beans with almond slices, baked potato with butter and a chocolate cake for dessert. Romantic with candles and gentle music in the background at HOME with the phone off the hook.
SO making HOME a more comfortable place is possible with our own touches and style. Amen.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME. No place! Home is where you hang your hat or where your living presence is made known. A sweet place to relax and recover from the outside world. You can have very little material possessions where the warmth of a person makes all the difference. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I behold HOME and it is Beautiful.
A roof over my head and a recliner to sit in. I am living in a decent structure with interior running water and air conditioning in the heat of the summer. Heat in the winter. Nice appliances to enhance this place. I am grateful to have a place to call HOME. The older I get, the more grateful I become. As we morph into the small COTTAGE, there is a peace that envelopes me. I wish we were already there, but first I have to recover from having a hysterectomy that was performed the old fashioned way due to a oversized uterus.
Though our present HOME is a mess with little left in it because we are working at relocating to our tiny COTTAGE that will become our HOME later in the year, this main house is what I call HOME for the time being. We are slowly progressing to getting everything out of here. We are on pause for the time being as I heal. This main house is where I am recovering from major surgery I had on Monday in Kansas City.
Surgery went exceptionally well as the doctor removed my uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and cervix. I was diagnosed with uterine cancer earlier this Summer. Because the uterus was so large, the test that they usually do with light to see if the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes, could not be done. I'll have to wait until the pathology returns in about a week.
A distorted uterus full of large fibroids. The uterus was approximately 20 centimeters in length. The average dimensions of the uterus in an adult female are 8 cm long, 5 cm across, and 4 cm thick. I don't know what all the dimensions of my uterus were other than the length of mine was 20 cm. That's huge. Over twice the length it should have been. With the incision I have, I almost think this is how it feels to have a cesarean.
I asked the doctor if he would take a picture of the uterus so I could see what it looked like. He did. It was interesting to see and yet I can not explain in words how weird it was and grossly distorted. I pray the cancer was all contained.
Why I had such large fibroids, I don't know. I can only guess.
I am incredibly sore. Pain meds are being taken. I'm walking and standing about every two hours. Going to the toilet is challenging. Successfully, I am mastering the technique. I have hopes of recovering and moving toward a healthier LIFESTYLE. Falling asleep throughout the day taking naps to regain my strength.
I have a grown appreciation for the Hospital Staff. All were so kind to me.
Making the COTTAGE our HOME will come after I recover and can return to lifting things heavier than 10 pounds. That will be in 8 weeks or so and I will do what I can between now and then. No lifting or rigorous activity.
I am a HOMEBODY so as I recover I will be enjoying the presence of this place. Having a place to call HOME means so much to me. I gave death much thought before the surgery. Made some preparations in case I passed. How do I want to live? What changes will I make?
Having a heavenly HOME will be my destiny one day. I still may have a cancer battle in the near future if the results are bad. I will have to focus my thoughts are other things as I wait to hear. I have been thinking a great deal about the exercise I will do after I heal up. The food I will be eating is very important as I gear toward what is called clean eating and giving GOD thanks for the beautiful foods He has made for us as we live on planet earth.
The importance of HOME matters. HOME is what we make it. I truly am contented to be HOME.

UP AT 4:40 WEDNESDAY MORNING WITH A BUSY DAY PLANNED AHEAD OF ME. Temperatures were in the 90s. HOT for Kansas Springtime. I am relieved to be HOME after being gone since April 25th. I will hit the tired mark here in a little bit after it soaks in how busy I have been and now back at HOME. I'll take a few days to rest up before moving toward what I need to do. I am so glad to be HOME that I kept saying it out loud. "I am so glad to be HOME."
Mom fell and broke her hip last March 14th. While she was recovering from surgery, I'd drive back and forth to Newton from my HOME to see her and visit with her in the Hospital. Off and on for three weeks. Took her HOME April 5th and stayed with her until her April 9th Birthday where my sister took over for two weeks until I could return and stay with her for 17 days. She spent her first night alone at HOME last night.
She is using a walker for now to help her get around. She had Occupational Therapy as well as Physical Therapy while I was there. She has been dismissed and on her own for now as she has improved greatly.
While I was gone taking care of my elderly mom, the days moved slowly. I kept busy, but still the time moved slowly. No computer to work on or play with. No blogging. This has been the longest amount of time that I haven't blogged since I started blogging over ten years ago. Withdrawal was almost painless. As I sit and type on this computer board, it seems rewarding to type once again on this keyboard. My fingers seem to know where to go.
Wednesday night, I ate spaghetti and garlic bread for supper that my hubby fixed for me as a WELCOME HOME MEAL. I haven't had spaghetti in a long time nor have I had garlic bread. I overdid it, but will cut back on the calories tomorrow as I have been on the Daniel Diet for over two weeks. This go round has been a hard one for me to stay strictly on veggies and fruit. I lost a few pounds at my Mom's eating so many salads and soups.
Wednesday morning, I took my Mom to an out of town eye appointment. After a 40 minute drive to get there, we sat in the doctor's lobby for 40 minutes. She had her examination and checked out then we went to a very nice THRIFT STORE in McPherson.
Purchasing a few THRIFTY items, I thought how much fun it is to shop thrift. So enjoy this. I picked up an old Martha Stewart book with a drawing of her Turkey Hill Home and gardens. Magnificent lay out of her property. I can see why she has hung onto this place for all the years she has. This 1991 book originally sold for $50 and I spent a whopping 50 cents for it. That's THRIFT at her best.
It is only a dream of mine to own so much ground where one could garden and live out their days in solice and privacy. At 66, I'm slow to imagine the possibilities. Some take a small plot of ground and turn it into a very productive commodity...others, well not so much. I'm afraid I fall into the NOT SO MUCH group. Lord, I need to change and be more productive.
Lunch at ARBY'S. I had a oversized Chicken Salad Sandwich which I didn't eat all the delicious bread. Water to drink. Then we shopped at Walmart-Mart, drove HOME, unloaded our spoils.
I couldn't help but notice many AMISH woman shopping with their young children in McPherson. They do have a distinct look to themselves wearing a KAPP or prayer covering on their heads and clean dresses of assorted colors. There must be a Amish Colony near by.
Carrying my Mom's purchases into her HOME, I packed up my things and headed HOME to return to my LIFE in small town America as a HOMEMAKER and WIFE. Driving HOME across the Flint Hills on this HOT day was awesome with the blue skies and sunshine so I listened to some beautiful music which made me a HAPPY CAMPER. On my way HOME. What a nice place to be heading.
Talking to my hubby on my cell phone made my traveling time seem like I was almost HOME. I stopped by the Manhattan GOODWILL to make a donation of my Mom's clothing and shoes. While I stayed with her, we worked at thinning out her large closet full of clothing and shoes. It was like pulling teeth to get her to turn loose of clothing as she L O V E S her clothing. Still at 90, she cannot wear all the clothing she has unless she changes her clothing three times a day..... then maybe.
I took a clothing rack with me to make the job easier so I thought. She could sit in her chair while looking at her clothes. I had grouped the clothing in colors. I'd carry out from the closet a group of clothing hanging them on this rack so she could view the items.
Each garment was handed to her one item at a time. She'd look at it and decide to keep or give away. Mostly keep. Then after she went through a color group, I'd return the clothing to the closet and gather another group for her to view. Placing them on the rack, we did a repeat. Keep or donate. Back to the closet the keepers went and I'd gather another color assortment. The donation pile went to my car to get them out of her house and her sight so she wouldn't take the give aways back.
I grouped her clothing into sections of two piece outfits together, slacks together, dresses together and single blouses together. Thinned out her shoes. Didn't get to her purses or coats. Did my best to group all the similar colors together. There were blacks, grays, whites, tans, browns, oranges, pinks, reds, yellows, greens, blues and purples articles grouped together.
Another day we went through her dress slacks. She tried each pair on to see how they fit. Almost all of them fit. It took some time for her to slip on the slacks, stand up using her walker to balance, turn around, decide to keep or not, take the slacks off, sit down and repeat. She definitely got her exercise for the day. I thought for sure she'd be sore the next day, but she wasn't. Amazing for being 90.
In the bottom of her closet were two large storage boxes and we went through these as well. She has a way of rolling her blouses so more fits in the tubs. Then she has drawers full of clothing. I didn't go through the drawers, but she took it upon herself to go through one all by herself.
I dropped the cast offs at GOODWILL on my way HOME on Wednesday.
I SURVIVED the last 17 days eating organic vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, peanut butter throughout the day, and drinking V8 for Breakfast each morning. I'd fix a salad for lunch or supper. I'd prepare anything my Mom wanted. My days were full of setting the table, fixing coffee and preparing Mom's breakfast with her morning pills and apple juice to drink. Clearing the table, washing the dishes, putting the dishes away then do a few chores as she needed done. I took her to five medical appointments, grocery shopped, put items away, etc. There'd be lunch and supper to fix, etc.
I watched her like a hawk when walking outside and getting into and out of the car. My dear Mom is 90 and she wants to remain independent as long as possible. I was allowed to take afternoon naps as I was bushed. Late night TV was watching the GOLDEN GIRLS. Game shows galore. One night we watched the 1984 movie PLACES IN THE HEART. She liked it. Another time we watched CALL THE MIDWIFE on PBS.
There was too much excitement April 29th after a day of being out to a doctor appointment, tornado weather arrived and she wasn't too keen on going to the storm shelter provided where she has an apartment. I raised my voice at her as she hesitated to go. She wanted to go after the siren was sounded. The television had already said to take shelter. I raised my voice in frustration with her since she is hard of hearing and wanted to wait until the town's siren sounded. As far as I was concerned the siren had sounded from the television when they said to take cover. I went over to the center to see if it were unlocked. It wasn't so I asked her if she had a phone number that I could call to get the community center unlocked to where we could seek shelter. She did but wouldn't give it to me which added more frustration as she said to go back over and see if it were unlocked.
Once again I did and by this time it was unlocked. Over we went to the safety room. We sat through the storm and remained calm chatting with some of the other residents that had seeked shelter there. Andover, Kansas took a direct hit where much damage was done. Blessed that there were no deaths. 31 years ago, they were hit by a tornado as well. I remember this one.
We returned to her apartment to sleep. Mom moves slowly so walking from her apartment to the shelter isn't a fast event. Tornadoes sometimes drop from the heavens on top of you as you slowly walk to take cover. I was very concerned for our safety and Mom wasn't. This bothered me beyond words. I couldn't carry her or drag her to safety if I tried.
We spent Mother's Day together this year where I took her to the little town of Florence's TOWN and COUNTRY RESTAURANT for a fried chicken meal at Florence, KS. Incredibly busy and the wait was longer than usual. Nice to eat out for Mother's Day though and not have to wash the dishes. HAPPY Mother's Day.
We sat at this front table. What lacked in the atmosphere was made up with good fellowship and good food. Nothing fancy, still we had a good meal that was affordable.
Staying with Mom, I played as best I could on the new phone I got. It wasn't going very well as I am a dinosaur.
Taking it upon myself to go for evening walks 4 different times about her neighborhood was a very good stress reliever for me. My last walk was a sentimental one as I recalled walking these neighborhoods as a child with my cousin, Denice who was killed in a auto accident last July.
I walked past my Aunt Ann and Uncle Ezra's house also looking at Aunt Bertha and Uncle August old bungalow a short distance away. The memories come rushing back where I learned to ride a bicycle and ate homemade ice cream. As I walked in the heat I passed some churches and houses that I have admired for years. Across a bridge, through downtown and over to the Service Station my Parents use to own. Walked past the Post Office then by the City Park and back up the hill towards Mom's apartment. I clocked about two miles in the heat walking a solid hour and took another hour to cool off. I thought this small town was still a handsome place that one could live.
While walking, one doesn't cover as much territory as when driving. The things I saw while walking are viewed with a different eye. The slower pace is addictive.
When Mom was having therapy where she wasn't alone, I could slip away for a few minutes to run to the store or go by the local coffee shop for a hot almond milk steamer with froth on top. I looked forward to getting out to sip on one before returning to her apartment.
On Fridays, I went to the Hospital Auxiliary to shop at their lovely thrift store. I purchased a few blouses as I had packed very light and lacked clothing to wear as I stayed at Mom's. Picking up a few summer tops at a low price was affordable.
When I visit this part of the world where my Mom lives, I reminisce and relax as I go back into the past and think about the history in these places that I see. The small towns, the old buildings and houses that have weathered the storms of life and years of living.
I wish I could dine at the old Harvey House in Florence. Going back to a time that seems less hectic...am I kidding myself or what. When was life ever not hectic? A million thoughts in my head.
NOW I AM HOME to recoup and return to the hustle and bustle of remodeling our cottage. There's no place like HOME and I am so glad to be back. The deep purple border Irises greeted me as I walked across the lawn carrying my luggage. Oh so pretty to see.
“Marvel not that I said unto thee,
Ye must be born again.”
King James Version (KJV)
its rooms are filled with rare
and beautiful treasures.
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
